Frequently asked questions

How are words counted?

A word is any run of letters or numbers, so "don't", "well-known" and "2026" each count as one. Punctuation and symbols on their own don't count. Chinese, Japanese and Thai, which don't use spaces, are split into words by your browser.

Do characters include spaces?

The main Characters count includes spaces and line breaks, which is how most sites and character limits count. The No spaces figure leaves them out. Emoji count as one character each.

How is reading time worked out?

Reading time uses an average silent reading speed of 238 words per minute. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a typical pace for a talk or presentation.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

Your text is saved only in this browser, so it is still there if you close the tab. It is never uploaded. Press Clear to remove it.

What does keyword density mean?

It is how often a word appears, as a share of all words. Common short words such as "the" and "and" are left out. Writers use it to spot words they repeat too often, and for search engine optimisation.
