How to use the bubble level

  1. Open this page on your phone. On iPhone, tap Enable motion sensors and allow access.
  2. Lay the phone flat on the surface. The bubble moves toward the higher side, just like a spirit level.
  3. When the bubble sits in the centre circle and the badge says Level, the surface is within ±0.5°.
  4. For vertical surfaces, stand the phone on its edge and the display switches to a single bubble tube.

Calibrating your phone

Camera bumps, cases and small sensor errors can make a flat phone read slightly off. To fix this, place the phone on a level surface and tap Calibrate (set zero). If you don't have a known level surface, use the flip test: note the reading, turn the phone around 180° in the same spot, and if the numbers differ, the true level is halfway between them.

Common uses

  • Hanging picture frames, mirrors and TVs.
  • Installing shelves and checking furniture, washing machines or tables.
  • Setting up a camera tripod, a pool table or a fish tank.

Limitations

The level relies on your device's motion sensor and the browser's orientation data. Results vary between phones, and some browsers or privacy settings block motion sensors entirely. When you need guaranteed accuracy, use a physical spirit level.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is a phone level?

Good enough for hanging pictures, shelves and furniture, especially after calibration. Phone motion sensors vary by model and are not calibrated instruments, so use a proper spirit level for construction or anything that needs precise results.

How do I calibrate the level?

Place the phone on a surface you know is level, or on any flat surface and then turned around 180° to check, and tap Calibrate (set zero). The current position becomes 0°. Calibration is saved in your browser, and Reset calibration removes it.

Why does my iPhone ask for motion access?

Safari on iPhone and iPad requires permission before a website can read the motion sensors. Tap Enable motion sensors and choose Allow. The readings stay on your device.

Why doesn't the level work on my computer?

Most laptops and desktops have no motion sensor, so the browser has nothing to report. Open the page on a phone or tablet instead.

Will my screen turn off while I use the level?

No. While the level page is open, it asks your browser to keep the screen on, so you can leave the phone on a shelf and read it from a distance. The screen goes back to its normal timeout when you leave the page. This works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox.

Can I check a wall or door frame?

Yes. Stand the phone on its edge against the surface. The level switches to edge mode and measures along the edge the phone rests on.
