When to use an interval timer
High-intensity interval training alternates short, hard efforts with recovery. Counting seconds in your head is distracting, and a regular timer has to be reset every round. An interval timer handles the switching for you, so you can focus on the workout.
Popular interval formats
- Tabata: 20 seconds of work, 10 seconds of rest, 8 rounds.
- Beginner HIIT: 30 seconds of work, 30 seconds of rest, 8 to 10 rounds.
- EMOM: start a set every minute on the minute and rest for the remainder.
Frequently asked questions
Is Simple HIIT Timer free?
Yes. Simple HIIT Timer is free, runs in your browser and does not require an account.
Why is the HIIT timer on a different site?
Simple HIIT Timer was our first tool and has its own home at simplehiittimer.com, with workout history, medals and presets built specifically for interval training.
Can I use the stopwatch or countdown timer for workouts instead?
For a single timed effort, yes. For repeated work and rest intervals, an interval timer like Simple HIIT Timer is easier because it switches between phases for you.
